It froze over

Posted in Alt with tags , , on July 15, 2013 by zarigar

Blame my weird obsession with the Darkmoon Faire quests. Blame that dumb quest where you have to collect 250 Grisly Trophies. Blame my selective OCD that makes me unable to NOT pick that quest, even though the only thing it rewards you is rep.

(I say selective OCD because I have no problem pretending that archeology quest doesn’t exist.)

I actually went and played each toon long enough for them to finish that quest and turn it in. Some, like my pally, had carried that quest over from the previous month and didn’t need extra playtime.

Eventually it was down to my druid and my mage. I avoid questing and doing dps with my druid unless I absolutely had to, so the only way she was going to collect her trophies was running instance and LFR and hoping she collected enough.

Then there was my mage, who I had taken a firm stance on not playing.

Can anyone remember why? I think I may have select amnesia to go with my select OCD.

Was it because they changed some of the play style, so it was now a 4-button rotation instead of 3? Was it because I had been converted to Team Warlock and it’s not possible to also be Team Mage? Was it just a random proclamation that mages were evil and I was just going to have nothing to do with them?

Yeah, I don’t remember, but I know that I made it a point to not play my mage, so since it looks like I was going to break that I knew I would have to come here and post about it.

So grisly trophy collecting. The tipping point was probably that my druid had just picked up the quest and had 0 and my mage had the quest from a previous month (possibly a previous year) had about 75. All right, I can take her out to the beginning hozen area and see how it goes.

First I cobbled together her frost spec. Every one else was frost so she would be, too. I randomly picked what talents looked helpful and reset my spellbars. She had some random gear that other toons had sent her in case she was ever sent out into the world.

First problem, equipping that new gear broke her mogged look.

One of the pieces was a blue helm that matched nothing. So I had to go into the Interface and turn off helm display. Then I decided I didn’t like her hair. So I had to take her to the barbershop for a new style.

Finally I was ready to step out into the world. After a few minutes of hozen dying quickly I got cocky enough to queue for something. Oh, the brewery. Not my favorite but you can rack up the trophies quickly there.

The experience was sad. It was just randomly hitting buttons. I forgot that I had frozen orb and time warp. TIME WARP!!!!! BWahahaha. Failmage is fail. I forgot about mirror image until the last boss. For serious.

And yet at the end of the run I was #1 in dps and overall damage. I can probably thank the blue pieces she had gotten from the other alts. I’m sure Blizzard put her in a group of similarly-geared people. But coming in not at the bottom with what was basically as much button-flailing as when my druid goes boomkin, it was a nice bit of encouragement.

So there you have it. My mage went out and actually did something. Now when people see me logged in to her and she’s not in Org they don’t have to worry that I have been hacked.

(Maybe I’ll actually read up on magey stuff now, too…)

Bring on the Pain(saw)

Posted in Alt with tags , , on July 12, 2012 by zarigar

It’s so nice to see people in the game again. Moogik was back working on his warrior, Painsaw, (yay Moog!) and Slice was wandering around Org probably deciding on his next hairstyle, when Slice asked Moog if he wanted to run some dungeons.

Painsaw was apparently only a couple of points away from being eligible for heroics, so a quick stop to the AH was made to boost the ilevel. With Moog tanking and Slice healing, I had my choice of dps. The 2 that actually need VP are my mage and DK.

I was tempted to bring the DK and Howling Blast all the things but then I didn’t want to be the one blamed for driving Moog off tanking after one heroic, so I went with the mage.

I thought I was helping but I really wasn’t. First boss in Tol’vir I was just la-la-la Arcane Blasting away when he threw the little bomb things on the ground. When they started flashing yellow I barely glanced at them and figured I was close to the edge, but not really on it.

Bounce. Bounce. Bounce.

Didn’t die though I probably deserved to. What? I’m pretty. That excuses a lot of things. Even the fact that I didn’t realize until Siamat that I had ran almost the entire instance without a tabard on. >.<

Next instance was Stonecore. I could tell Slice was pleased. Arv logged on, saw we were in Stonecore, asked us how bored were we, then logged off in disgust.

I don’t remember much about that run except for Slice getting twitchy with his Leap of Faith when I didn’t move out of the way of the oncoming boulder quick enough. See? When you are pretty, people will save you from yourself.

Next was Halls of O and one of my favorite pugs: Mr. Let’s Work on Achievements in a Pug Group guy. I don’t have all the heroic achievements and it might be nice to get them done for when they all become account-wide but, meh, I just don’t really like trying for them with pugs. Moog said that his tank was still new but that didn’t seem to faze Mr Hunter.

Mr Hunter starts to break down when we would need to get I Hate That Song. Then, to my delight, he asks if our healer is any good. Our healer being, of course, lovable old Slice. Of course I can’t resist an opening like that and claim that we are carrying him.

Slice is annoyed by the question and I totally get it. In that one question he’s put either the success or the failure squarely on Slice. If we don’t get the achievement, it will be because Slice failed in some way.

[side rant]I sometimes get asked that when my healer gets placed into a dungeon in progess. Am I good? Good compared to what? Good as in I know what I’m doing or good as in I’m expected to keep up an undergeared tank and dps that stand in bad and if I don’t then I must be fail? [/side rant]

Anyway, I guess Slice is acceptable as a healer since no one dies and we get our achievement. (Even though Slice’s add-on LIED and said we failed it.)

After that we detour over to the camel boss and grab that achieve, too. Notari is pretty even when riding a camel.

One hump or two?

The gauntlet is kind of a mess. People keep running ahead and pulling the trogs on their own. Somewhere along the way we lose the ret pally and the frickin’ hunter backtracks to mass rez him. The pally gets up but then promptly dies again (I admit, I LOLed.) The speed run achieve doesn’t happen and I think we even did the boss with the pally dead.

After that we skip the optional bosses up top, take our VP and flee.

Overall I would call it a success. Moogik did a good job tanking and I always give thumbs up to anyone willing to tank.

If only we didn’t have to carry Slice…

A stranger told me I was pretty

Posted in Alt with tags , , , , on June 18, 2012 by zarigar

And everyone knows strangers give out the best compliments.

(God, what has mogging done to me?)

I had to abandon an earlier LFR on Notari when someone decided to pull Deathwing with a tank and some healers missing. I was annoyed that they were still going to waste time trying so I just left.

The next day I tried again and went “yes!” when the pop-up box said 3/4 then said “no!” when I saw a half-formed group standing on a pile of skeletons. Oh well, waiting for the group to form meant Notari got to stand around looking pretty.

Ok, the word pretty is never actually used. But there is a sideways smiley face! That has to count for something.

It was a good omen since once the group finally formed, we were able to kill him one shot. Sadly, no loot for me.

Side tangent: I learned that if you roll Need on something, then you say “eff this” because the rolls are taking too long, and you drop raid, and you go to your mailbox later, it will be there if you ended up winning it. Hmm..I may have been the only person who did not know that.

You get that same message when your CtA bag can’t be given to you because all your bags are full. Blah blah we found this in the twisting nether, blah blah. So I don’t have to sit around waiting for the timers to run out because some jackholes just dropped group without passing.

Good to know.

Pretty people really do get nice things

Omg I actually play my horde toons!

First I planned to take Notari the Now Beautiful Failmage through LFR. I went to take off her tabard, since there was no rep to gain and I wanted her to go in pretty. I noticed she had on the shirt that level 1 belfs come with and wondered what she would look like if it was taken off. So I took off her shirt (giggity) and saw that her robe now looked like this:

So apparently that shirt was covering up her exposed belly. Erm ok. The weird cut-off for her belly looked wrong. There was so much detailing in the neck and top part of the robe that having her stomach randomly showing seemed really distracting. Shirt back on, get into queue.

Right from the start it was a mess. It seemed like 10 seconds into the raid (the 2nd half) the entire floor was covered in purple fire and no one was taunting the dragons. Wipe #1. Mass exodus of people, including tanks, then off again. Same issue, wipe #2.

Well, I’m done here. I decided instead to take Notari out to Magister’s Terrace and see if she could get some pretty clothes. She got some shoulders that went into her void storage and, after killing Kael’thas Sunstrider, she was picking through his spoils and found herself with a new pet.

Ugh. Ok, well at least it wasn’t the mount.

I wasn’t done with masochism so I switched over to Tenderloyne the Forgotten Holy Pally and sent her into LFR next. It went much smoother for her; she ended up with a new belt and a head token.

I hadn’t realized that she had never done the 2nd half of LFR before so it was kind of embarassing when her achieve popped up. Whoops. I don’t even think I would have taken her in if I realized she had never been there.

That was only the first part of the embarassment, because once I turned in the head token and gemmed and enchanted that thing up, I put it on her and was stunned. Horrible. It was horrible.

I had to take a ghetto screenshot because I couldn’t get one from the loading screen. The thing is so huge that most of it goes off the screen. Maybe when she gets more matching pieces it won’t look so awful, but I couldn’t stand it. I didn’t even think I had the patience to try to mog around it at this time.

So I did the rare thing for a non-mohawked toon and turned off helm. Sigh. One day I will make you pretty, just not right now.

After that, I wanted to run Sabryel the Other Blood Elf Toon But This One is a DK through MT and see if she could find some mog stuffs. I raced through that place and was feeling leet when I got the achieve at the end and saw that I had ran through it on normal.

Oops. Switched it to heroic and went through again. She got a cool looking axe that would be cool to mog. She also picked up a dagger that I really liked, too bad DKs can’t use them.

Killed Kae’thas again, got the achieve for Heroic MT and was going through his loot when…are you effing kidding me?

Sabryel got the mount of her very first friggin’ try??!! Sonofawhore.

I send two rarely played alts into a heroic with the intent of them finding some dress-up clothes and they each come out with something nicer? I don’t have the pet or mount on Zarigar. I mean, sure I don’t farm that regularly on Zari or anything, but it’s annoying that they picked up that stuff with so little effort.

Sigh. The beautiful people get everything.

Somebody stop me

With Zarigar’s archaeology maxed out I was free to continue on with some other noble pursuits, like taking each of my alts through Darkmoon Faire. Although DMF has done a lot towards people moving up in their professions, I still have toons whose big, main professions aren’t maxed out yet.

I was on Notari when Arv needed a raid group to get into Kara, so while he did that I started poking around the AH. So yeah, I guess I’m officially done pretending I’m not one of those mogging people.

There wasn’t a whole of options–which was kind of surprising–but I did end up finding a hat that looked kind of interesting. Notari is still kind of ghetto and has a helm with spirit on it (I know) and so I’ve been covering it up with a different looking helm. Then I found a Gossamer Headpiece and I really liked how it looked. So much so that I wanted to find pieces that would complement it.

This is how Notari looked before:

It’s such a sad mishmash of random gear. The transmog I did on her helm to hide her spirit helm didn’t really help the appearance of the rest of her gear.

The new helm is white with some gold trim so I decided to do something similar like I had done for Sarinde and put her in white. Lorethos made for her a Runecloth Robe and some Vicious Embersilk Shoulders. Some Back Mageweave Gloves off the AH fixed her wretched gloves and she looked like this:

I like it, she looked much more put together, but I still had the problem of the cloak clashing. There weren’t any cloaks on the AH that would work; seriously there was less than half a page of options available. WTF?

The only one Lorethos could make that would kind of work required wool. I didn’t have any and I didn’t want to pay the rip-off prices for them so I sent Notari into Shadowfang Keep to farm some up. 10 minutes later I had my Pearl-Clasped Cloak.

Then I had a new problem. My white-on-white-on-white color scheme combined with Notari’s jaunty new hat gave her a weird appearance from behind like she was some old-time ice cream man. I mostly blame the hat, even though it was the inspiration source for this obsession.

However, I had just picked up Robes of Arugal off the boss in SFK which were black with some silver/white trim. So switching the robes out gave me this:

I really do like both robes for different reasons, but for now I am sticking with the black ones, only because I don’t want to spend any more money changing it back. (And also, yes, I totally cheated in not showing the updated clothes with the tabard on.)

Hopefully my failmage will at least not look as fail as she used to. And I won’t promise that there won’t be any more transmog posts. Sorry. This might be the Summer of Mogging.

The new Jendora?

Posted in Alt with tags , on October 7, 2011 by zarigar

As was the goal, Notari the failmage got up to 84 to get the Brewfest boss and picked up her reward trinket for doing so. Since I was already on a roll I just went ahead and pushed her onwards towards 85.

So now I have…6?…7?…level 85 characters?

Hold on.

Zarigar. Lorethos. Jendora. Notari. Tenderloyne. Sarinde.

Ok, 6. So there I was, logged on to my 6th 85 when Repgrind smart-assedly asks if Notari is the new Jendora. Ha.

It’s felt like I fought with this mage for a long time. I went through periods where I couldn’t stand to play her and then other times when I would maniacally level her up. She held on to my BoA gear, then I would steal it away from her to give to my other leveling toons.

As I say with all my toons, I don’t know what I will do with them. There is no master plan.

I have figured out, though, that I kind of like the period between hitting 85 and trying to gear them up as best as I can. With Notari in particular, I was always holding onto gear and looking for pieces that would boost my ilevel and allow me to get into the next level of instances. I would have to remind myself not to sell a cloak I was holding onto because it boosted my ilevel more than the level 1 BoA cloak did.

I learned what it’s like to have the shame of equipping a reward piece with spirit on it because the rest of the stats were so much better. (I never rolled Need on a spirit piece, I just couldn’t go that far. But if the RNG god happened to drop it in my bag….)

I enjoy this time where every new piece makes a noticeable difference in my mana pool and output. I can put big boy enchants on things now, knowing I will have them for a while.

I like going into an instance and seeing how I compare against others. It’s not like healing where I wasn’t comfortable unless I almost outgeared it. She’s slowly gearing up and after that…who knows?

Maybe there is hope for that baby warlock after all.

Bring the player not the class

As I mentioned in The Plan, one of my goals is to level up my mage. Currently I’m only interested in getting her up to 75 so she can learn the next tier of professions then she can sit on the sideline and cut gems for me. Leveling her beyond that is not really something I’m looking forward to.

I’m wondering why. I have a few ideas that are kind of petty.

The first one is I broke one of my rules in creating her: I created a race/sex duplicate to a toon I already had. Sabyrel was a female blood elf long before Notari was made. For my other toons, I’ve been careful to have each one be a little different so that they didn’t feel like the same character wearing a different set of clothes.

Sure, one day I may run out of options and have to start making doubles, but for now I like that every other toon is unique. Even across serves, I don’t have another male troll and I don’t have another female draenei. I do wonder if I might like my mage more if I paid to change her race, but she’s such low priority that I haven’t even done the research to see how possible/annoying/expensive it would be.

Another reason I kind of hate her is her casting animation. I wish they had had the preview casting animations back when she was created. I might have caught on earlier that her stupid little stick arms look ridiculous flailing about as she casts stuff. It’s a good thing she rarely has to carry her weapons in her hand; those spindly little things might break off.

(I have no clue why this doesn’t bother me at all with the DK. Maybe it’s because the armor makes her look more beefier or the attack animations aren’t as ridiculous with Sabryel.)

Maybe the biggest reason I’m kind of meh on her is how much she is starting to feel like a rehash of Zarigar. I’m not saying that they are the same or that playing a shaman is the same as playing a mage, but come on:

  • Mages had a unique CC in polymorph. Then shaman got something similar in hex.
  • Shaman had an awesome bloodlust. Let’s give mages a time warp. (I think I just dislike this one because bloodlust has the awesome ROAR! effect with it that time warp doesn’t so I often miss that time warp has been cast and try to bloodlust, too.)
  • Mages came with a decurse. Shaman used to have it in resto, now it’s for everyone. We can be twinsies and do decurse bitch duty together!

Mages have tons of abilities that shaman don’t and vice-versa. Maybe I’m just digging for a justifiable reason to hate my mage.

But if mages get the ability to drop buff sticks into the ground or shaman become able to conjure food, I will call shenanigans on this nonsense.
